STATEMENT OF JAMES S. GILMORE III, PRESIDENT AND CEO OF THE AMERICAN OPPORTUNITY/FREE CONGRESS FOUNDATION, ON THE DEATH OF SENATOR JOHN McCAIN.
All of us at the American Opportunity/Free Congress Foundation mourn the loss of Senator John McCain, who passed away this past Saturday. Senator McCain endured his last illness with great dignity and grace. His example reminds all of us to use the time and health that we have to the benefit and well-being of our family, friends, colleagues, and our country.
John McCain served his country well, as a fine officer in the U.S. Navy. When he became a prisoner of war, he endured great hardship on behalf of his country. Upon his return home, he chose the difficult path of politics to continue to serve his fellow countrymen, at a time he could have stepped aside. Service was in John McCain’s blood.
Senator McCain was a determined supporter of the U.S. military. As Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, he worked to keep America strong. John McCain understood the importance of American national power in keeping the peace, and sustaining the American values that are the beacon of hope for the world.
The challenge now for all of us is to find and support the new leaders in the defense arena who will emerge to stand in John McCain’s shoes and support America's unique position in the world in this time of challenge. With Senator McCain’s passing, that duty now rests with all of us.
